At UTC Plymouth, we are committed to actively promoting the core British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. These values underpin our curriculum, ethos and daily practice, supporting both the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development (SMSC) of students and our wider safeguarding responsibilities, including the Prevent Duty. 

We aim to prepare students not only for academic success, but also to become responsible, respectful, active citizens who contribute positively to life in modern Britain. 

 

In line with DfE and Ofsted expectations and the Prevent Duty, UTC Plymouth: 

• Actively challenges discriminatory language or behaviour 

• Does not permit the promotion of extremist views or ideologies 

• Provides staff training so all adults can identify and respond to concerning attitudes 

• Ensures that teaching encourages balanced, evidence‑based discussion 

We promote open, respectful debate while ensuring that fundamental British Values are upheld at all times. 

Roles and Responsibilities 

• Staff uphold the Teachers’ Standards, modelling and promoting British Values in their conduct, lessons and interactions 

• Leaders and governors oversee the strategic embedding of British Values across the curriculum, pastoral systems and safeguarding practices 

• Students are encouraged to reflect these values in their behaviour, choices and engagement with learning 

Monitoring and Impact 

We evaluate the impact of our British Values work through: 

• Student voice feedback 

• Behaviour, attendance and safeguarding data 

• Curriculum reviews and lesson observations 

• Monitoring assemblies, enrichment and SMSC provision 

Evidence of impact is reflected in students’ attitudes, conduct, contribution to the school community and readiness for life beyond UTC Plymouth.
