A: The admissions process is managed entirely by Plymouth City Council and and the Local Authority ( LA)  to ensure it is fair and consistent for all applicants. The school itself has no involvement in deciding places. When allocating places, the LAtypically considers factors such as: 

• Whether the applicant has siblings already attending the school 

• The family’s home address and proximity to the school 

• Whether the child has an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) 

• Other criteria set out in the admissions policy 

A: We generally encourage families to focus on the many other excellent options available locally. However, if a place is not offered, the student can be added to the waiting list that the LA holds on our behalf.  It’s important to be transparent that places rarely become available, for example, in a recent year, only one place was offered following 30 appeals. 

A: For a Year 7 Normal Point of Entry admission, where you are wishing for your child to transition from UTC Plymouth from a Year 6 and Primary School setting, students need to apply before the 31st October, for an admission the following September intake. Your child's Primary School will support you through this process. 

Students can also apply to join us as an in-year admission if they wish to join UTC Plymouth. This is all through the LA portal. If you apply through an in-year admission and the year group is full, your child will be placed on the waiting list for that year group. The LA will share with you this information and the process for staying on the waiting list long term. It is important to note that if your child joins UTC Plymouth after October half term of year 10, they will be unable to study options of GCSE Art or Sports Studies, nor the compulsory qualification of Digital Information Technology, as examinable tasks submission windows are set ahead of this. Students entering the college at this point will enter a pathway of study to improve attainment and backfill knowledge gaps in core subjects. 

A: Students who wish to join our Sixth Form should begin by completing the Apply Now form. Once an application is received, a member of our team, usually Scott, Hayley or Mike will get in touch to discuss subject options and next steps.

For our current Year 11 UTC students, a dedicated drop‑down day will take place in March. All external applicants will be invited in for a tour and a meeting with a member of the Sixth Form team.

Throughout the year, we send regular “keeping warm” emails to ensure applicants stay informed and supported. Additional parent meetings can be arranged if needed.

Closer to the summer, we provide full details about Results Day, enrolment, and the first day of term. Applicants are also welcome to meet with us on Results Day to finalise their place.

A: No. While many of our students are from Plymouth, we also welcome applications from across Devon and Cornwall. Admissions are managed through the schools LA, in this case Plymouth City Council. 

A: We specialise in STEM subjects, Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics and work closely with industry partners to provide a curriculum that is practical, professional, and future-focused. Students are treated as emerging young adults and leave us with not only qualifications but also the skills, confidence, and connections to succeed in apprenticeships, university, or employment. 

A: Yes. All students study the full range of core subjects, including English, Maths, and Science, alongside their chosen technical and creative pathways. This ensures they leave with a balanced education as well as specialist skills. 

A: Applications are made online through the LA’s school admissions portal. Once your application is submitted, the LA will manage the process and notify you of the outcome. We recommend also attending one of our open events or taster days to experience UTC Plymouth first-hand before applying.
